What Is Web Elevation?
My most substantial body of client work is web elevation. And yet, the phrase “web elevation” raises some brows with my peers and potential clients.
I describe web elevation as a face-lift for existing websites with good foundations. Layout changes, web copy rewrites, asset and graphic updates all cover the scope of “web elevation.”
Web elevation projects are designed to give the client more confidence in their online presence, and garner more business from their website — without having to completely redesign their site.
The differences between web elevation and design:
Client wants a new theme and brand guidelines for their website — web design.
Client wants new copy, new graphics, and some additional pages — web elevation.
Web Design (to me) is anything that requires creating a new web flow and overall site style.
Web Elevation (to me) is minor changes that make a big impact.
You might be asking…
Why hire a freelancer for web elevation? Why not just do it yourself?
Well… For a number of reasons.
Lots of small business pay for a website when they first get started, and have never had the time or experience to learn how to update it themselves years later.
Sometimes business owners know that their website needs work, but they’re not sure what needs to be changed or how to do it.
Clients want fresh ideas and new eyes on their site. They want someone who works in this realm to tell them what to do.
Web Elevation is a fraction of the cost of Web Design.
That’s just a fact.
It’s like buying a few great accessories. You don’t have to change your entire wardrobe to bring a new sense of style and energy to the party. You can throw on a hat or wear a nice pair of gold earrings.
You are still you, your style is still your style, but you have a little extra flair that you didn’t have before.
Here’s an example of a recent web elevation project…
I was connected to The Neighborhood Counseling Center through a fellow freelancer on the Atlanta Independent Creatives Slack. The founders of the local therapy group explained to me that they wanted their website to showcase more of their services and team, garner more engagement, and overall represent their brand more.
My proposal included:
Choosing a new landing page banner that speaks to the brand
Giving each team member more space for their bio and information (we ended up creating a separate page for each of them)
Utilizing the logo colors and fonts in the web styles
Writing additional copy for pages like “Services,” “Our Neighborhood,” and “Contact.”
Utilizing more keywords in page headers and copy
Building a “Workshops” page for events, registration, and ticket payment
Writing alt-tags
Writing SEO page descriptions
